Hello summer! The weather is getting hot in Tunisia; and this calls for a change of food. No more hot and hearty stews or soups to keep us warm during the cold months. When the sun is out, Tunisians look for something fresh, crunchy, and light. This summer salad checks all the boxes!

Tunisian Salad / Slata Tounsia

From the name, you call tell it is an authentic Tunisian dish. After all, the salad is named “The Tunisian Salad”. It is a very basic and simple salad, but the flavors are amazing.

Slata Tounsia

The main ingredients are cucumbers, tomatoes, and lemon. Some add-ons are dried mint, sweet green peppers, or sour green apples, capers, and sometimes onions. You must not forget the Tuna chunks, hard-boiled egg, and olives as garnish. I guarantee you will find this salad in almost every restaurant around the country. It is a salad loved by all; adults, teens, and kids.

Slata Tounsia RECIPE

Tunisian Salad – Slata Tounsia. A video made by Rahma Rekik for Carthage Magazine.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 medium cucumbers
  • 2 small tomatoes
  • Tuna chunks
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt & pepper
  • Dried mint

How to Make Tunisian Salad / Slata Tounsia

  • Start by washing all the vegetables. Next, dice the cucumbers into small cubes. The smaller, the better. (watch the recipe video for the Tunisian way of dicing)
  • Dice the tomatoes and add to a dish with the cucumbers. If you are going to add the sour apple, onions, or sweet peppers, those need to be diced as well and added to the salad.
  • Add lemon juice, olive oil, salt & pepper, and the dried mint. Mix it all together and taste.
  • Serve on a plate and garnish with tuna chunks and hard boiled egg.

Happy cooking!
