One of the five prisoners branded as dangerous terrorists who escaped from a jail in Tunisia were captured today in.
The inmates escaped from El Mornaguia prison early on Tuesday. One of them was captured today by citizens today in Hay Ettadhamen neighborhood west of Tunis. No official statement yet by the Ministry of Interior.
Mornaguia Prison, located 20 kilometers west of Tunis, is the country’s largest prison. It was constructed under the rule of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, according to international specifications, and with international financial and technological support.
Ahmed Malki, imprisoned for killing two politicians in 2013, was among those who escaped. He is the one who was captured today.
Also known as “the Somali”, he had been serving a 24-year sentence for the assassination of secular politicians Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi, it said.
The killings in 2013 plunged Tunisia into political crisis, forcing the eventual resignation of the government.
The escaped prisoners also included Rayd Touati, who security sources say has taken part in the most violent attacks that have shaken Tunisia in the past decade, according to Reuters.
Tunisian prisons have been under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice for ten years.
