TUNIS/Tunisia – (TAP) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it was «deeply disturbed» by the violent incidents that took place in Tunis on Monday and Tuesday morning, when some undocumented migrants forcibly entered its premises, causing material damage and leading to tense interactions with local police forces.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, UNHCR urged an immediate end to all forms of violence and urged a de-escalation of tensions so that the situation for migrants is not further aggravated.
“While UNHCR understands the fears and frustrations of those protesting and respects their right to peacefully protest in line with national laws, we denounce the recent incidents at our premises by a small group of protesters,” said Monica Noro, UNHCR Representative in Tunisia.
“We urge all to engage with us in the search for meaningful and peaceful solutions, as repeatedly proposed since the start of the demonstration,» she added.
“While UNHCR understands the fears and frustrations of protestors and respects their right to protest peacefully in accordance with national laws, we condemn the recent incidents at our premises by a small group of protestors,” said Monica Noro, UNHCR Representative in Tunisia.
She added, “We urge everyone to join us in the search for meaningful and peaceful solutions, as has been repeatedly proposed since the demonstration began.”
In the same context, UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing protection and life-saving assistance to displaced people in Tunisia and urged all parties associated to engage in constructive dialogue and work toward addressing the urgent needs and finding a peaceful solution to the situation as soon as possible.
