Coronavirus cases in Tunisia: Tunisia’s official COVID-19 infection number crossed the 500,000 mark on Monday evening, with the Ministry of Health reporting 4,310 new infections and 155 new deaths.
Tunisia’s health system has “collapsed” under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health ministry said on Thursday, describing the virus’s affect on the country as “catastrophic”.
According to the Ministry of Health statement released on Friday July 9th, the total recorded COVID-19 cases in Tunisia has reached 501,923 with 16,494 deaths. The statement added that the total number of recoveries had reached 400,378.
The daily number of COVID-19 cases, after hovering around the 10,000 mark, has been the highest since the the virus hit the country. It is believed that the actual number of infections is much higher than those officially recorded.
After the first Coronavirus wave that hit the country earlier this year, and the success achieved in keeping COVID-19 firmly under control in Tunisia, the Tunisian government already took several precaution measures to limit the impact of the second wave of the pandemic.
With what believed as “firm decisions” to combat the fourth wave of COVID-19, curfew and several other precautions have been in place for over than a month now, yet the situation is not under control and citizens are not abiding that much with existing health precautions.
Despite these precautions, Tunisia has not seen significant improvements to keep the virus under control.
The Tunisian government is already in discussions to secure a significant dose of the COVID-19 vaccine once it becomes available. However, the timeline of this remains unclear.
