Quick Answer — Tunis to Tozeur is the country’s longest common hop: ~430 km, deep into the Jerid. The honest ranking: fly if the oasis is the destination — Tunisair Express links Tunis to Tozeur-Nefta airport in about an hour, a handful of times weekly (verify the current schedule; frequencies shift with season); drive if the journey is the point — 5.5–6.5 hours via Kairouan and Gafsa, and stretching it over two days through Kairouan turns a transfer into the spine of a southern road trip; night bus for the budget-and-time play; louage for the hardy (long, usually with a change at Gafsa). And the persistent rumor: The passenger train, suspended for most of a decade, resumed in September 2025 and runs once a day each way (Tunis 07:35, Tozeur 06:00, roughly nine hours via Sfax and Gafsa). It stopped again for eighteen days in summer 2026 and came back on 9 July, so confirm it is running before you plan around it; the trains guide has the detail.

Getting to the palm capital of the south is the one leg of a Tunisia trip that demands a real decision — an hour in the air versus most of a day on the road — and the internet’s answers are years out of date. Here’s the current, honest picture.

✈️ Fly — ~1 hour · the time-saver

Tunisair Express serves Tozeur-Nefta (TOE) from Tunis-Carthage — roughly an hour wheels-to-wheels, with the palmeraie appearing under the wing like a green sea.

Flights run a few days per week rather than daily, and seats tighten around the December–February high season and festival weeks, so book ahead (verify current days and fares). Landing-side logistics are easy: the airport sits minutes from town, hotels arrange pickups, and where to stay in Tozeur has the bases.

🚗 Drive — 5.5–6.5 hours · the road-trip spine

The route runs Tunis → Kairouan → Gafsa → Tozeur on good main roads, with the landscape performing a slow-motion transformation from olive plains to steppe to desert. Driven straight it’s a long but honest day (leave early, lunch in Gafsa, arrive with light to spare — never finish after dark).

Driven well, it’s two days with a Kairouan overnight — which is exactly the front half of our 7-day Tunisia road trip. Fuel is plentiful on this axis (fill at half-tank south of Gafsa as habit); compare rentals with deposits and excess visible on DiscoverCars, and take the rental guide‘s advice on the walk-around photos.

🚌 Night bus — the budget classic

SNTRI’s long-distance coaches run Tunis–Tozeur including overnight services (verify current schedule) — air-conditioned, reserved seats, and the veteran move of trading a hotel night for 400 km. Book a day or two ahead in season; bring a layer, the AC wins every argument.

🚐 Louage — for the hardy

Possible, long, and usually a two-act play: Tunis (Moncef Bey) to Gafsa, then a second louage to Tozeur. Pocket-change pricing, maximum immersion, most of a day gone. The right choice only when budget rules everything (the louage system).

🚆 The train question, settled

Old guidebooks and stale websites still advertise a Tunis–Tozeur sleeper and the famous Lézard Rouge canyon train at Metlaoui. The honest 2026 status: regular passenger service on the Tozeur line has been suspended for years, and the Lézard Rouge has been out of service awaiting its own revival (both get announced for relaunch periodically — verify current status, and treat any booking site claiming otherwise with suspicion). Plan around road and air; if the trains return, they’ll be news worth celebrating — and updating this page for.

The Verdict

Short trip, oasis-focused: fly — two extra desert days beat six hours of steppe.

Building the southern loop: drive it via Kairouan over two days; the transfer becomes the itinerary.

Backpacker maths: the night bus down, and consider flying back.

Once there, everything — the palmeraie, the mountain oases, the chott, Star Wars — is in the Tozeur guide and the Sahara field guide; and remember the south’s connectivity rule — download offline maps, land with an eSIM already working (SIM guide).

Planning the whole trip, not just this leg? Our guide All About Tunisia ($24.99, 572 pages) covers every route, region, and practical answer in one download.
