On Tuesday in Algiers, Tunisia and Algeria formalized a new defense cooperation agreement, broadening collaboration across various military sectors such as training, knowledge sharing, improved coordination, joint operations, and border security efforts.
The agreement, signed during Tunisian Defense Minister Khaled Shili’s official visit to Algeria from October 6 to 8, builds upon the earlier 2001 agreement. It aims to enhance the strategic partnership between the two nations, reinforcing mutual trust and respect while paving the way for new opportunities to tackle regional threats.
During his visit, Minister Shili met with General Saïd Chengriha, the Algerian Chief of Staff and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense. The two were accompanied by senior military officials from both countries. Shili also visited the Martyr’s Memorial, laying a wreath at the monument.
The discussions primarily focused on strengthening military cooperation, with an emphasis on finding ways to expand collaboration. Both sides deliberated on coordinated efforts to address pressing security concerns, including terrorism, human trafficking, irregular migration, smuggling, and transnational crime.
The talks underscored the importance of regular consultations, coordination, and continued follow-up on the outcomes of military cooperation committees. Minister Shili stressed the need for ongoing exchanges, visits, training, and shared participation in military forums hosted by either nation.
Shili reiterated Tunisia’s commitment to advancing military cooperation, highlighting its dedication to ensuring the security and stability of the region in line with the aspirations of both countries’ people.
General Chengriha, in turn, praised the successful partnership between the two nations and their shared goal of establishing a robust strategic alliance. He emphasized that the defense agreement would play a crucial role in promoting military cooperation and strengthening regional security, urging both countries to activate and expand their collaborative efforts to enhance operational capabilities and address emerging regional and global challenges.
