The Carthage Film Festival is the fourth big regional event making such an announcement.

The Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs canceled the 34th edition of the Carthage Film Festival. The festival set to run from October 28 to November 4, 2023, in Tunis, serves as an important platform for filmmakers from across the region.

According to an official statement from the Ministry, the move to cancel the festival has been made “in solidarity with our Palestinian brothers.”

The Carthage Film Festival which has been primarily accepting submissions from Arab or African directors since its establishment in 1966, has been dedicated to developing the regional film industry. The focus of this year’s event was female filmmakers from Tunisia.

Multiple film festivals in the Middle East and North Africa have been canceled or postponed as a result of the current situation in the region, which has led to this cancellation. The Carthage Film Festival is the fourth event making such an announcement – after the Cairo International Film Festival, Al Gouna, and Qatar’s Ajyal.
