Wildfires erupt in Tunisia’s Tabarka. The city is caught up in flames and fumes. Dozens of families have been evacuated downtown to youth homes and schools.

A devastating wildfire raged on the Tunisian city of Tabarka today, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people from affected villages and beaches on Saturday.

Footage features locals and emergency services attempting to extinguish the raging fire as it continues to destroy infrastructure and property.

According to media reports, coastguard vessels and private boats rushed to evacuate at least 1,000 people from areas near Maloula and Tabarka in the southeastern part of the island. Authorities also urged residents to leave the sourrounding villages as the flames approached.

Civil protection authorities issued warnings of a very high risk of wildfires in Rhodes and other parts of Greece due to soaring temperatures reaching 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) amid an ongoing heatwave.

Tunisia has experienced an increase in wildfires in recent years, with hotter, drier, and windier summers exacerbating the situation. Meteorologists predict that the scorching temperatures will persist until the end of the month, amplifying the risk of further wildfires.
