Tunisia’s senior taekwondo team delivered a standout showing at the 2026 Astana Open, taking six medals on the G1-ranked senior day of the tournament in the Kazakh capital. World champion Wafa Masghouni led the way with the team’s only gold, in a field that featured several of the sport’s heavyweight nations β€” South Korea, Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia.

The six-medal haul β€” one gold, two silver and three bronze β€” came across the senior competition and stands as Tunisia’s full senior return from the event.

The medals

The headline names

Wafa Masghouni produced the day’s standout result, winning gold at βˆ’62 kg. As a reigning world champion, she is the most decorated name in the squad and the clear centrepiece of Tunisia’s campaign.

Firas Katoussi, who became Tunisia’s first Olympic taekwondo gold medalist in Paris 2024, took silver at βˆ’87 kg β€” a strong return against a deep G1 field.

Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi, a two-time Olympic medalist with silver in Tokyo and bronze in Paris, claimed bronze at βˆ’68 kg. According to the Tunisian Taekwondo Federation, a knee injury picked up during competition stopped his run to the final.

Rounding out the six were FarΓ¨s Boujmii (silver, βˆ’68 kg), Ouhoud Ben Aoun (bronze, βˆ’53 kg) and Ayoub Jendoubi (bronze, βˆ’54 kg).

About the tournament

The Astana Open is rated G1 on the World Taekwondo ranking calendar, meaning the points on offer count toward Olympic and world qualification standings. The 2026 senior competition drew several of the discipline’s leading nations, including South Korea, Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia, giving Tunisia’s medals real weight ahead of the qualification cycles to come.

Six podium finishes in a single senior day β€” headlined by a world champion’s gold and silver from an Olympic champion β€” underlines the depth Tunisia continues to carry in a sport that has become one of its most reliable sources of international success.
