The National Administrative Council of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) has unanimously agreed to hold a general strike on January 21, 2026.
The decision was made in response to concerns over the protection of workers’ rights and freedoms, with a particular focus on preserving the right to unionize and the right to engage in negotiations for wage increases. The UGTT also emphasized the importance of upholding social dialogue, which has been a significant achievement for labor relations in Tunisia.
This strike, which will involve a wide range of sectors, is seen as a protest against perceived threats to these fundamental rights. The announcement of the strike was reported by Achaab union newspaper which is affiliated with the UGTT.
This move reflects the ongoing efforts of the union to secure better working conditions and ensure that the voices of workers are heard in discussions about their future.
