Tunisia Rolls Out Online Car Tax Payment Platform in 20262 min read

Tunisia Rolls Out Online Car Tax Payment Platform in 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, Tunisia introduces a new digital approach to paying car taxes. The once-required vehicle sticker, the “vignette,” is now a thing of the past. Instead, authorities will verify vehicle tax compliance by scanning license plates, making the process more streamlined and efficient. This transition is part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s tax collection systems.

One of the key innovations in this new system is the ability to pay car taxes online through the official platform: taxe-circulation.finances.gov.tn. This will allow users to pay using their credit or mobile payment methods. Upon successful payment, individuals will receive an electronic receipt with a QR code, which will serve as proof of payment for future inspections. The new system eliminates the need for a physical sticker on the windshield.

Tax Rates for 2026

The price for the 2026 vehicle tax depends on several factors including the engine type (gasoline, diesel, or GPL) and the car’s fiscal horsepower. Here’s a breakdown of the tax rates:

  • For Individuals (Personne Physique):
    • 4 CV: Prices range from 65 TND (gasoline) to 390 TND (GPL).
    • 5-7 CV: Prices vary from 130 TND (gasoline) to 455 TND (GPL).
    • Prices continue to increase for higher horsepower vehicles, with the highest rate reaching 2500 TND for a 16 CV vehicle running on diesel.
  • For Corporations (Personne Morale):
    • The rates for companies are higher than for individual owners, with similar variations based on fuel type and horsepower.

There are also special provisions for electric vehicles, which enjoy a 50% discount on the standard rates, and hybrid vehicles, where the tax is based on the engine fuel type and fiscal horsepower.

Payment Options

In addition to the new online payment option, which is the most convenient, residents can still opt to pay at physical finance counters. However, they will receive paper receipts instead of the new electronic ones.

It’s important to note that there are no longer any physical stickers to place on your windshield. Instead, motorists should retain their electronic receipt or paper receipt (if applicable) and keep the QR code for inspection purposes. Vehicle compliance can now be checked directly by authorities using the license plate number.

Deadlines and Penalties

To avoid penalties, the deadlines for payment are as follows:

  • February 5, 2026: Public institutions, local authorities, and companies.
  • March 5, 2026: Individuals with vehicles bearing even-numbered registration plates.
  • April 5, 2026: Individuals with vehicles bearing odd-numbered registration plates.
  • May 5, 2026: For rental vehicles and those under leasing contracts.

The government has also introduced a fiscal amnesty provision, where individuals who pay the 2026 tax on time can clear any outstanding taxes from previous years at no additional cost.

Exemptions

Certain vehicles are exempt from the car tax, including:

  • Vehicles used for transporting goods weighing over 300 kg.
  • Vehicles registered outside of Tunisia during the first three months of their stay.
  • A variety of commercial vehicles, such as taxis, rural transport vehicles, and those used for tourism.

This new initiative marks a significant step towards modernization in Tunisia’s tax collection methods, offering convenience and flexibility for both individuals and businesses alike.
