Tunisian chicken Mosli is an authentic Tunisian dish that is very delicious, healthy, and filling.
This Tunisian dish is so versatile! Using the same method, one can prepare different kinds of “Mossli” just by changing the animal protein; lamb, goat, beef, fish, etc. Tunisians eat this with bread. Bread can be cut into bite size pieces to dip it in the sauce!
Tunisian Chicken Mosli
This dish a popular among adults and kids. A great thing is that it’s also healthy, lactose–free, nut-free, and gluten-free. This makes it a great dish to offer for people who are following special diets.
It is also very easy to prepare and does not require a lot of time to prepare. One of the best parts is that it’s easy to make a bigger batch for once. In such so a way that, you can feed a bigger family or group of friends with a minimum effort.
INGREDIENTS: (Serves 8)
- 5 cups sliced onions
- 1/4 cup olive or vegetable oil
- 8 chicken pieces
- 2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp chili powder
- 5 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 Tbsp tomato paste
- 1L of water divided
- 3 potatoes
- 3 tomatoes
- 3 green peppers
- 2 rosemary sprigs
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes
- French baguette or Tabouna
How to Cook Tunisian Chicken Mosli:
- In a bowl, place the chicken and season it with the turmeric, paprika, salt, black pepper, chili powder, and crushed garlics. Set aside
- In a large skillet, sauté the onions in the oil on medium/high heat. Once the onions are wilted, place the seasoned chicken pieces on top of the sautéed onions. Add water ~250 ml.
- In a small bowl, whisk the tomato paste and some water until the tomato paste is diluted Pour on top of the chicken and cover the skillet. Reduce heat to medium. Let simmer for 15-20 min and keep adding water as the water in the skillet starts to evaporate
- While the sauce is simmering, cut the potatoes into large wedges or slices, and the tomatoes and peppers in half. Add the potatoes first. When the potatoes are almost done, add the tomatoes, the peppers, rosemary sprigs, and red pepper flakes. Cover and reduce to low heat. Cook until the potatoes and the chicken are all done
- To serve, in a deep dish place the sauce (about 3/4 of a cup), a piece of chicken, potato wedge, 1/2 of a tomato, and a pepper. Serve with slices of French baguette or any different kind of bread such as Tabouna
